Reducing Congestion and Optimizing Signal Timing Systems With Miovision Solutions

Traffic congestion is a significant problem plaguing many cities worldwide. Severe traffic congestion can increase the risk of vehicular accidents and CO2 emissions. With global initiatives focused on improving public road safety and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, cities benefit from implementing traffic congestion reduction measures. One of the most effective methods of reducing congestion is implementing a customizable and adaptable signal timing infrastructure.

Adaptive signal timing control systems, like Miovision Surtrac, continuously update to reflect current traffic conditions and generate optimized traffic signal timing plans for each intersection as needed. Improving on the traditional Time-of-Day (TOD) method for traffic signal timing, communities that enable adaptive signal systems maximized traffic throughput and provided smoother traffic flow and minimized queuing.

In August 2021, the City of Peterborough initiated a pilot project to compare traditional signal timing systems with adaptive ones. Using Miovision TrafficLink solutions with Miovision Surtrac adaptive traffic signal control systems, the project resulted in close to $1 Million in reduced user costs, reduced vehicle emissions by 20%, and decreased vehicle delay by 41.3%, without increasing staff, budget, or timing capacities.
